Introduction

In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), two major players have emerged: Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT. This article explores the history and development, user records, and a comparison between both of the AI systems, highlighting Google's challenges in integrating Gemini effectively.

History and Development

ChatGPT:

• Initial Development: OpenAI's journey began on June 16, 2016, with the publication of research on generative models. This early work laid the foundation for models capable of generating data, similar to the inputs they were trained on.

• Progressive Enhancements: Significant milestones include the fine-tuning of GPT-2 in 2019 and the introduction of InstructGPT models in January 2022. These models were designed to follow instructions more accurately.

• Public Launch: ChatGPT was officially launched on November 30, 2022, using the GPT-3.5 model. A premium subscription, ChatGPT Plus, was introduced on February 1, 2023, offering enhanced features and reduced downtime.

• API and Plugins: The ChatGPT API was released on March 1, 2023, allowing integration into various applications. By May 31, 2023, over 200 plugins were available, expanding its functionality significantly.

Google Gemini:

• Cautious Beginnings: Despite having the capability to showcase its LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) technology earlier, Google refrained from public demonstrations due to security concerns. This cautious approach delayed Bard's entry into the market.

• Official Launch: In response to the growing popularity of ChatGPT, Google announced Bard in February 2023. Initially powered by a lightweight version of LaMDA, Bard has since transitioned to Google's advanced PaLM 2 model. Then, on December 6, 2023, Google announced Gemini, a family of multimodal large language models developed by Google DeepMind, serving as the successor to LaMDA and PaLM 2.

User Records

ChatGPT:

1. The AI chatbot witnessed astounding growth, hitting 1 million users within five days of launch.

2. By January 2023, it reached a milestone of 100 million monthly active users.

3. The platform sustained its momentum, experiencing an 80% surge in user count from January to August 2023.

4. Based on June 2024 data from Similarweb, ChatGPT attracts 627 million visitors each month.

5. 77.2 million people use ChatGPT in the US alone.

6. 23% of American adults have ever used ChatGPT.

7. ChatGPT Plus has around 3.9 million paying subscribers in the US.

8. ChatGPT accounts for 69.9% of the market share of the AI tools.

9. OpenAI’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) stands at $2 billion.

10. OpenAI is currently valued at $86 billion.

11. OpenAI has 1,200 employees worldwide.

Gemini:

1. By March 2023, Google Bard now Gemini, was attracting 30 million monthly visits, mainly from users in the US and UK.

2. The AI chatbot underwent substantial growth, surging to 142.6 million visitors in May 2023.

3. This surge marked a notable increase from the 49.7 million visitors recorded in April 2023.

4. Gemini upgraded version of Bard has a total of 330.9 million monthly visits.

5. 60.14% of the Gemini users are male, while 39.86% are female.

6. Gemini is available in 46 languages, including Chinese, German, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, etc.

Which one is Better?

Gemini and ChatGPT each have distinct strengths. Below is a brief list of reasons to choose either Gemini or ChatGPT.

Reasons to prefer Gemini:

• Superior at internet searching

• Can create images with Imagen 2

• Free with an upgrade option to Gemini Advanced, featuring Gemini 1.5 Pro

• Gemini 1.5 Pro handles video inputs

• Provides real-time data and current event searches

• Retrieves articles from the internet and can direct you to the website for specific images

• Analyzes input images for free, but currently cannot read images of humans

• Offers multiple output choices

Reasons to prefer ChatGPT:

• Excels at generating long-form content

• Capable of generating images with DALL-E 3

• Utilizes the powerful GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, or the latest GPT-4o multimodal LLM from OpenAI

• Paid upgrades available for enterprise users and teams

• Allows creation and sharing of custom ChatGPT versions on the GPT store

• Supports a wide range of integrations

Based on the overall capabilities, Gemini is suggested for research work due to its internet search functionality, whereas ChatGPT is more appropriate for content creation.

Major Mistake by Bard (Now Gemini)

1. In an advertisement of the chatbot posted by Google on Twitter, Bard is asked to name some new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope. In its response, Bard mentions in one of the points that the telescope took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.

2. However, that is not the case. As per NASA, the first image of an exoplanet was taken in the year 2004. The error by Google's Bard was reported by Reuters.

3. Speaking about the incident, a Google spokesperson told The Verge an American technology news website: “This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program. We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”

4. As a result, Google's parent company Alphabet reported a loss of USD 100 billion in the share market.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while Gemini and ChatGPT are both powerful AI chatbots with their own strengths and weaknesses, Google's missteps in AI integration have hindered Gemini's potential and allowed ChatGPT to take the lead. However, Google has taken several steps to address the issue, including implementing a rigorous testing process, and gathering feedback. The company has also made significant improvements to Gemini's accuracy, including logic and reasoning improvements, fact-checking capabilities, and math and word problem-solving. However, it's too early to determine the success of Gemini in competition with ChatGPT, it shows that Google is actively participating in the AI chatbot race.
